Episode 071: All Fired Up
Reaching the League Village, Ash finds a crowd waiting for someone. Ash assumes they are waiting for him, but he's wrong as usual. They are waiting for the runner carrying Pokemon League Torch, which carries the legendary flame of Moltres. Ash asks to carry it, and the president of the league, an old man, sees that Ash has plenty of spirit and allows him to. Ash, Brock and Misty each take a turn carrying the torch, but as Ash runs with it, Team Rocket flys in and steals the torch. Fortunatly, the league president has a spare torch, while Team Rocket watches their stolen torch burn out. Finally reaching the stadium, Ash find Gary waiting for him. Gary tells Ash he has no chance at the league. That night, Ash can't sleep and wanders over to the stadium and gazes at the battle field, determined to win. The next morning, the opening ceremony begins and the torch is brought up to a bigger torch over the stadium, when suddenly Team Rocket, dressed as League officials, stealing the flame once again, lighting the bigger flame, then stealing that as well, using a giant mechanical grasshopper. Ash confronts Team Rocket, but they spray him with the flame, expecting Ash to be burned to a crisp. To everyone's surprise, the flame does not burn Ash! Moltres emerges from the legendary flames and wrecks Team Rocket's machine and sends them blasting off. Moltres lights the flame of the League Games, and the competition is set to begin!
