Episode 048: Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden

Ash and Bulbasaur win a match against a lumberjack and his Rhyhorn. As Ash praises Bulbasaur for a job well done, he notices that Bulbasaur is lying on the ground, as if in pain. Rushing to the nearby Pokemon Center, Ash begs Nurse Joy to help his Pokemon. As Nurse Joy wheels Bulbasaur into the E.R., Misty and Togepi notice that the flowers in the waiting room have suddenly burst into bloom. After examining Bulbasaur, Joy tells the worried Ash that Bulbasaur is just ready to evolve. She tells Ash that around a certain time each year, Bulbasaur from around the land gather in the Mysterious Garden and evolve into Ivysaur. She tells them that no human has ever seen it, so it is dismissed as an illusion. While Ash is excited that Bulbasaur will evolve into a more powerful form, it is obvious that Bulbasaur doesn't feel the same way. During the night, Bulbsaur sneaks out, but Pikachu hears him leave and follows him. As Bulbasaur talks to Pikachu, a small group of Bulbsaur emerge out of the forest and drag Ash's Bulbasaur away. Pikachu runs back to the Pokecenter and alerts Ash to what happened. Ash, Brock and Misty follow Pikachu as he leads the way deep into the forest. Meanwhile, Team Rocket spots the Bulbasaur, but are sent blasting off by a team Vine Whip. Ash and Pikachu realize that the forest is trying to hinder their progress and block off the path with branches. Diving through a hole in the branches, Ash, Pikachu, Misty and Brock make it into the Mysterious Garden, where dozens of Bulbasaur have gathered. A giant Venusaur appears and begins to chant. The other Bulbasaur begin to chant with him and evolve into Ivysaur.. except for Ash's Bulbasaur. Bulbasaur refuses to evolve. Venusaur is about to punish Bulbsaur, but Ash leaps out and defends his friend. Ash tries to convince Venusaur to let Bulbasaur decide on his own when to evolve, but Venusaur doesn't seem like it agrees with Ash. Suddenly, Team Rocket appears in their balloon and attempts to steal the Ivysaur and Venusaur by sucking them up with a huge vaccum. Bulbasaur uses Solar Beam to make the sun rise and blasts Team Rocket with solar energy. After crashing into the ground Jessie, James and Meowth are faced with really angry Ivysaur and Venusaur, who hit them with Vine Whips once again, sending them blasting off for good. Venusaur thanks Bulbasaur and allows him to evolve whenever he wants to.
