Episode 047: Who Gets To Keep Togepi

Arriving at a Pokemon Center, Ash receives a letter from Professor Oak, asking him to give him a call. Ash does, and Oak mentions that there is a Pokedex upgrade available. Oak upgrades Dexter via the video phone and then tells Ash to go out and find more Pokemon. Having lunch at a restaurant, Ash asks Brock when he thinks the egg they found is going to hatch (see Attack of the Prehistoric Pokemon). Ash, Brock and Misty have their own visions of the Pokemon that will hatch. Meanwhile, Team Rocket, disguised as a waitress and busboy, overhear them and plot to steal the egg for themselves, hoping to hatch a Dratini. They dress up as egg salesmen and mix up the real egg with fake ones. As Ash and the rest scramble among the fakes eggs, Team Rocket runs off with the real egg. At the hideout, Meowth mothers the egg as Jessie and James watch in amazement as Meowth talks to it, gives it a bath, polishes it and even warms it with his own body. Meanwhile, Ash follows the trail of fake eggs to Team Rocket's bungalow. They break into the house and in the ensueing battle, Ash, Misty, Brock, Pikachu, Jessie, James and Meowth play hot potato with the airborne egg. In the end, Pikachu catches the egg and gives it to Ash. Suddenly, the egg starts to hatch! Just as the egg fully hatches, Misty shoves her way in front of Ash. The egg hatches and a cute Pokemon pops out! It squeals with delight when it sees Misty. Team Rocket tries to steal it back, but Pikachu shocks them out and Ash and his friends jog out. In the park, Misty plays with the new Pokemon, while Ash looks it up on Dexter. Dexter tells them the Pokemon is Togepi, but not much information is known about it. Ash, Brock and Misty argue over who gets to keep Togepi, when Team Rocket shows up yet again. Meowth begs them to give the egg back to him, since he cared for it more than any of them put together. Jessie and James tell them how much Meowth cared for Togepi. Ash decides they will have a Pokemon battle tournament to decide who will get Togepi, except for Jessie and James, because Meowth says they didn't care for the egg at all. The battle will be a sudden death, so they will only use one Pokemon. Meowth is at a loss since neither Jessie nor James will allow him to use their Pokemon, but he realizes that he IS a Pokemon! The first match is Onix vs. Meowth. Meowth is about to lose, but he grabs a bucket of water and weakens Onix with it, then uses Fury Swipes. Onix faints. The next match is against Ash and Misty. Ash calls Bulbasaur, and Misty is about to call her Pokemon, when Psyduck pops out. Unable to switch Pokemon, Misty is forced to battle with Psyduck. She tries to get Bulbasaur to attack Psyduck in the head, so Psyduck can get a headache and use it's powerful attacks. Ash is wise to her, so he orders Bulbasaur to tickle Psyduck instead. Psyduck runs away, and Ash is the winner! The final match is Ash vs. Meowth. Ash uses Pikachu and though Meowth vows to win for Togepi, he loses instantly with Pikachu's thundershock. Meowth sorrofully leaves. Ash tries to claim Togepi, but it is clear that Togepi likes Misty better, since she was the first thing it saw when it hatched, and thinks she's its mother.
