Episode 046: So Near, Yet So Farfetch'd Ash, Pikachu, Misty and Brock take a break from their travels. Ash, Pikachu and Brock go to get some water from a river while Misty rests on a rock. She hears a rustling in the bushes and sees a Farfetch'd. Excited to see such a rare Pokemon, Misty chases it through the forest. Coming around a bend, she runs right into another kid, dropping her bag. He apologizes and hands Misty her bag before running off into the woods. When Misty rejoins Ash and Brock, she finds out that her bag isn't full of her Poke-Balls, but rocks! The boy she had run into had switched her bag when she dropped it. They report the incident to Officer Jenny, who tells them that boy and his Farfetch'd have been tricking trainers for a while. Meanwhile, the boy and Farfetch'd run into Team Rocket. The boy offers to trade for his Farfetch'd and leads Jessie and James down to the river. The boy has to run back for something, leaving behind his bag and Farfetch'd. Team Rocket takes advantage of the situation by snatching Farfetch'd and the boy's bag, then hopping on a boat. However, the boat has been rigged and it sinks, with Farfetch'd swimming away with Team Rocket's Pokemon. Back at the boy's tent, he regrets that he has to steal in order for him and Farfetch'd to survive, and feels that Farfetch'd is too weak to battle. As the boy and Farfetch'd eat lunch, Psyduck pops out of his ball and goes off in search of Misty, who is also in the woods searching for her missing bag. Meanwhile, Team Rocket finds the boy, who tricks them again by giving them a bag full of Voltorbs. As Team Rocket flys off, Ash and the others, accompanied by Officer Jenny, find Psyduck, who leads them to the boy. Misty demands her Pokemon, while Ash challenges the boy to a Pokemon battle. The boy feels that Farfetch'd is too weak, but Farfetch'd wants to battle! Ash sends out Bulbasaur, who Vine Whips Farfetch'd, but Farfetch'd uses Agility and defeats Bulbasaur! The boy is shocked that Farfetch'd could battle, and tells them he wouldn't have started stealing if he knew Farfetch'd had those powers. Misty demands a match too, but since she hasn't gotten her Pokemon back, all she has is Psyduck. Farfetch'd laughs at Psyduck, and begins to hit Psyduck on the head with it's onion leek. Psyduck's headache gets worse and uses Disable to defeat Farfetch'd! Later, the boy returns the Pokemon he stole and promises to stay straight and along with his Farfetch'd, become the best trainer he can be.
